The project
Set within Breach Candy Hospital, Seagull Café was conceived as a change of pace — a space that feels removed from its clinical surroundings and instead draws its energy from the sea. The intent was not to theme, but to lift: a place where light, colour and warmth offer a genuine respite.
The design takes its cue from the café’s setting beside the sea. A painted horizon mural runs the length of one wall — pale sky above, deep blue below — with yellow awnings set over alcoves the way they would be over a row of beach huts. Round white tables, pale chairs and a slatted white ceiling keep the space open and bright.
A white railing running along the mural and a banquette in blue-and-grey stripe complete the seaside mood, while checkerboard tile climbs from the floor to the counter. Small framed prints of sails and swimmers, and the café’s own sign, keep the theme light rather than laboured.
